I was listening to an old episode of a Tim Ferris Show Podcast, and this episode featured an interview with Debbie Millman. Debbie Millman is an American Author, Designer, Educator and Podcastor, and to be honest I’ve never heard of her until it popped up on my Podcasts lists. She had a tough childhood and early life, but succeeded beyond her wildest dreams. Yes yes, we’ve all heard this sort of thing, but one interesting thing that she instructed on the episode was an exercise that she did while taking a class at The School of Visual Arts, led by Milton Glaser, the super famous designer who created the I heart NY logo. Since he no longer teaches it, she borrowed the idea and teaches it to her students. It is to make a 10 year plan for yourself, by describing your day. She says, be unafraid. Write like you will succeed at all these things. You don’t need to tell people, you can keep it to yourself.
I like stuff like this. It might sound self helpy, but who cares, there are a lot of other things that are a bigger waste of time. And while writing this, it made me think, like really really think, what the eff do I want in 10 years? Will I be happy if I had the same job? Where do I want to live? I didn’t realize how short sighted I was, like my future plan was only 2 years ahead, and that is pushing it. And shoot, if I can write whatever I want (and eventually get it) in my 10 year plan, I am living on the beach and surfing in the morning, yo. Debbie Millman said that the remarkable thing about this plan is that how many of Milton Glaser’s students came back to say their plan came true, herself included. And how many her own students came back to say the same. Over and over again, students were shocked. Fiiiine, I will write it. I mean, what do you have to lose? Take a weekend afternoon and write your 10 year plan. And dream big.
